Day 8 - day 1 of Highlights of Italy tour - Venice

Saturday 10th September 2011

Going island hopping today, first to Murano then onto Burano. These transport tickets are fantastic. Is very hot and humid here and we all got a bit burnt yesterday. We've seen the weather forecasts for Melbourne, just a tad cooler here. Big day of walking yesterday, so some trips on the ferry will be very welcome.

To get to Murano we took the long way around to see more from the water, past the ports there was 6 huge cruise ships all tied up together, then down past the Googenhiem Museum we rejoined the main canal briefly before heading north to Fort Notte. A quick change of ferries. On the way we passed the Cimitri (cemetery) island. Murano was really nice a bit quieter and more space. Lots of blown glass from huge sculptures down to tiny trinkets of unique style.

Then was back on the ferry to Fort Notre to change to another ferry for Burano, which is a small fishing island. The most notable features were the narrow canals and the brightly colored houses will pattened sheets across the doors. Lovely place.

For tea tonight we went up to this pizza place not far from the hotel, it was excellent, great atmosphere with lots of locals and what we picked as a tour group, but more about that later. I finally got to have a red beer and Max had this amazing lemon liquor. Karen won for meal of the night, don't know what it was but it looked like a giant Cornish pastie and when you broke it open it had ham, cheese, mushrooms, she said it was really nice. The meal this time including sweets and 2 rounds of drinks 20 euro per head.

You know that tour group I was talking about well that was OUR tour group, we'd stuffed up the days and we were actually a day late! Luckily was met the tour director in the foyer of the hotel by accident, she was writing a note for the desk clerk to give to us. Oooppps!

Posted the first lot of photos on Facebook tonight. Judy with a pig and the Nightwatchman, and Max with some jugs of beer.
