Hot Rod History

Jack Morgan’s ’34 Roadster

The first color Hot Rod cover (in April ’51) featured an at-the-drags shot of Jack Morgan’s ’34 roadster. The ’37 Ford truck grille and 5-inch channel job garner first looks, but closer inspection reveals a bunch of ways in which this roadster was ahead of its time—in particular, the stunning aluminum firewall, the aluminum hood with Dzus fasteners, the fiberlite upholstery, the safety-glass windshield, and the louvered belly pan running the entire length of the car. The engine was a bored-and-stroked ’46 Mercury flathead with Smith heads and a Cyclone three-carb manifold. The SCTA dash tag proclaims a 127.65-mph pass, proving that this ’34 did more than just look fantastic.
