John Charles Mathew
John, a labourer, still living at home with his mother, Lydia Ann in Dartmoor, was 21 when he enlisted as a driver on the 5 May 1915.
His unit was the 22nd Battalion Head-Quarters Staff.
The unit embarked (AWM Embarkation Roll number) from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on 10 May 1915.
John died of diphtheria on 14 October 1915.
His body was buried in the Cairo War Memorial Cemetery (Row D, Grave No 130), Egypt.
His name appears on panel number 96 at the Roll of Honour, Australian War Memorial in Canberra, Australia.

For his efforts John received the following medals: 1914-15 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal.
Johns older brother, (218) Pte James Mark KERR, 8th Light Horse Regiment, died of disease, 19 November 1915.
So now Lydia, who lost a daughter Harriet (age 7) in 1899 and whose husband James had died some 5 years earlier, had now lost her 2 oldest sons within 5 weeks of each other.
