Thailand 2013
Day 1 Melbourne to Bangkok
Friday 2013/05/03
Depart Melbourne for Bangkok at 11.30 on Thai Airways. Great flight, 2 meals and 9hrs later we arrived 6am local time.
We had seen the hotel on our last visit to Thailand and thought we'd like to stay there as it looked different. I think we must have forgotten how different it was. Inital impressions was that it was very dark and mixed strong colours with an industrial
look. But it grew on us over the 4 das we were there.
I didnt get any sleep on the plane , so grabbed an hour when we arrived at Siam@Siam while the girls went shopping.
Bought some pork and rice from a street vendor for lunch, 50Bt (about $1.50AU).
Then in the afternoon we did a canal tour. We were picked up at 2pm and taken to River City wharf in a long boat and we headed up river and then left along a canal and then right along a number of smaller and smaller canals. They got so small I was amazed that the boat could get down them. But it was a great way to see how people lived. There were several groups of kids swiming and jumping off things into the water and one even swam under the boat. Saw this huge lizard thing on the river bank. They did the usual stop to feed the catfish, looked like there were hundreds of them. Once we were back out on the main river we transferred to a rice barge and were treated to an afternoon tea of fruit and MaiTais. Very nice. Back to the wharf about 5.30. A nice little outing.
Peter was supposed to arrive about 6, but due to traffic we didnt see him till 8.30. So we walked down the road towards MBK and found a place for tea. Very good, with a live Thai musician doing covers of 70's American songs. We were the only ones to clap, I think Jude was trying to chat him up.
When Peter finally arrived we ended up just having some drinks at the hotel and catching up. Great time.
